The future of a program

In 1996 I visited Boise for the first time and fell in love with a great city. A year later it became a place I now call home. My first exposure to Boise State football came that year and the relationship has grown right along side the program. The Broncos were dominating in the Big West and then the WAC. I watched the community embrace a program, it’s players and coaches. I’ve watched with admiration and pride the impact Boise State has had on our community.

Blog Swap: Bulldog Bounce!

The team at The Bulldog Bounce,  a Fresno State blog agreed to do a Q&A with BTN. We enjoyed the opportunity and look forward to a great game Friday night. The first series of questions are asked of BTN and our contributor Derek Castle provided the answers followed by the questions asked by BTN for TBB.

1.) How strange is it after the past five years for you to look at the statistics and see a Fresno State QB with more passing yards than Boise State’s best QB ever Kellen Moore?

Derek Carr is putting up some great numbers so far.  He is definitely living up to the hype (and bloodlines).  Am I surprised he has more passing yards than Moore?  Not at all.  The main reason his yards are a little below Carr’s is because Moore has been working with a short field all year. Our punter is averaging 40.53 yards per punt, our defense is keeping teams pinned back, and Mitch Burroughs is leading the Mountain West Conference in punt returns with a 15 yard per return average, with Chris Potter second in the MWC with a 12.17 yard per return average.  All these factors combined add up to a great field position for Kellen Moore and Boise State.  The most important statistic to look at (and the one Chris Petersen stresses) is his 73.9% completion percentage, compared to Carr’s 61.2%.  Kellen is simply very accurate and always seems to find the open man.

Rearview Mirror: Nevada

Post Game Thoughts:

The Broncos defense was dominant holding Nevada to 182 yards for the entire game.  To put that into perspective, the Wolf Pack was 15th in the nation averaging 483 yards a game.  Two of those games were against a top 10 Oregon team and Texas Tech out of the Big 12.  The absence of Cody Fajaro at QB may have hurt the Pack offensively but probably would not have made much of a difference.  The Pack was an abysmal 2-14 on third down conversions and was only able to run the ball for 59 yards on the day.  The defensive front four for the Broncos are one of the best units in the country as they have dominated everybody they have faced.  With this defense on the field, Boise State will always have a chance against anybody.

Bronco Sports: Doug Martin Interview

Dear Coach Pete – About Nevada

Dear Coach Pete,

I want you to know we appreciate you. I know when you say the play was sloppy or we need to work on ________, you are simply trying to keep the critics at bay and accept the blame. The fact is Coach, you won! We know that it was the first home game against a team that was probably hard to get excited about and the return home probably caused a distraction or two. The fact is you did the right thing by giving our future QB’s an opportunity to get some playing time. We had the game well under control and Kellen was his normal self with precision and grace.

Five Mile and Boise State

I never knew how great I had it.

As kids, most of us have the thoughts of getting away from our home town.  Where we grow up is never as “cool” or “exciting” as anywhere else in the entire world.  Growing up in the neighborhoods around Five Mile/Overland in the 1980’s I was the same way.  Boise was boring, and the far away lands of Los Angeles and New York were so much more exciting and provided unlimited possibilities.  A lot of my daydreaming occurred on the short bike rides to Elms Park and Five Mile Plaza, two of the strip malls that were built in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s at the corner of Five Mile and Overland.  I spent a lot, if not most of my free time and summer vacations there.  And I never knew how great I had it.

Rearview Mirror: Tulsa

Post Game Thoughts:

Saturday’s game versus Tulsa was another day at the office followed by another victory.  However, Boise State has yet to play a full four quarters of football this season.  At times it was sloppy and to me it seems they are lacking a killer instinct, the ability to put the throttle down and keep it down.  On the games first drive the Broncos fumbled the ball twice on the goal line, missed the extra point on their first score gave up 21 points in the second half after total domination in the first half.  Right now Boise State is not playing like a top 10 team because they are only playing 2-3 quarters of football every week.  Once they play a complete game, I think they will be hard to beat.  Right now the potential is there, but they just have to find that missing component to get them to play a full game.

Boise State vs Tulsa Keys To The Game

1.) “The Blue”, the first key to this game is the stadium and field it will be played in. Bronco Stadium is a place of dominance for Boise State (74-1 since 1999), and home games are something the fans in Boise hold in special regard. This being the first home game of the season will make this a very emotional game, expect Boise State to jump out to a quick and impressive start.

2.) Tackling, Tulsa brings a very balanced attack to the table, having rushed the ball 127 times and thrown the ball 91 times. It will be up to the Boise State defense to be ready for all aspects of a football game. In the first two games Boise State has shown a weakness in this area. I expect a much better effort at home and tackling will be a major key to a dominate win in the home opener.
